Annual Midwinter Meeting of thj 1 (in American Roentgen Ray Society, St. Louis. Jin, Feb. 21, 1921. Behavior of the Stomach in Ulcer and Cancer of the Duodena in ; S. 125, D. 75. Pulse, temperature and respirationnormal. X-RAY EXAMINATION Chesl. The chest was examined by thefluorescent screen in both the upright andhorizontal positions. No abnormalities werediscovered. Castro-intestinal Tract. A glass of bariumand water was administered with the patientstanding. This passed the esophagus in the A plate made of the abdomen at this timeshows also much barium still retained in thesmall intestines. The colon is fairly well out-lined, but not well filled. Another small portionoi barium and water was administered to thepatient in order to obtain, if possible, a fillingof the duodenal bulb. Forty-eight hours lateranother plate was made of the abdomen. Thisshows a very large gastric residue, a consider-able quantity of barium in the small intestinesand a fairly complete filling of the colon.

No barium had escaped from the stomach.Compare with later plates showing gaping pylorus alsowith inhibited peristalsis and marked retentions. usual manner. The filling and unfolding ol thestomach showed a moderate ptosis and relaxa-tion. There was but little effort at peristalsis.The barium settled to the lower pole ol thestomach, giving the characteristic half-moonappearance seen in cases of obstruction. Aplate made in the upright position illustratesthese points and shows a single shallow peris-taltic wave in the greater curvature. A bubbleof trapped gas indicates the approximatelocation of the duodenal bulb. The indefiniteoutline of the pyloric antrum of the stomachis suggestive of obstruction.
