While the distance afforded by the longmetal handle is considerable protectionto the operator, it is not sufficient for all radium for their treatment and a dangerousamount of exposure on the part of theoperator. Many of these are very superficial and acentimeter or less in diameter. In thetreatment of such lesions this bulb hasproved very valuable. It can be held in

To add to the safetythere has been constructed a screen linedby 6 mm. of lead, with a class window forobservation, and perforations at variouslevels to permit passage of the applicatorhandle (Fig. 2). The very large number of malignant skinlesions, usually basal cell epitheliomas, require the use of considerable filtered place readily for the short period necessary(Fig. 3). An exposure of two minutes with600 inc. of emanation is sufficient to clearup entirely a rodent ulcer 8 to 10 mm. indiameter. Since the radiation is from aBattened spherical surface, it is betteradapted to these small lesions than a tubeof radium which gives an oval field ofradiation. Being unliltered, both beta and New Type of Applicator for Radium Emanation 55 gamma radiation is utilized, resulting ina saving of radioactivity, and, since theradiation is softer, the reaction is not sodeep, and healing is much more prompt. We have found it advantageous toaccumulate th
