e, which was the tendency of theinjected air to remain in the colon, especiallyin subjects with peritoneal adhesions, organicstenoses, spastic contraction, etc., of the bowel.Artificial pneumoperitoneum is also open toobjections such as disturbances of the staticrelations of the viscera which have exception-ally proved serious. In insufflation the customhas been to employ either atmospheric air oroxygen, neither of which gases is readily ab-sorbed. The author has substituted carbonicacid as having greater absorbability by theintestine. One should secure a tube of com-pressed carbonic acid of the ordinary commer-cial type. This may be connected with anoxygen gas bag which serves as a reservoir andfrom which the carbonic acid is conveyed intothe rectum under screen control. It is notnecessary to evacuate the colon in advance ofthe insufflation. The examination must be maderapidly before much of the gas can be absorbed.Cases are narrated which bring out the greatadvantages of the method.
