Nussbaimis important discoveries of the origin of the M. sphincterpupillae in birds and mammals from the epithelium at the pupillarjmargin of the optic cup and of the origin of the retractor lentis musclein fishes from the epithelium bordering on the choroid fissure are otdeep significance. His discoveries have recently been confirmed bySzili, who has traced carefully the development of the sphincter pupillaemuscle in man from the epithelium al)0ut the pupillar)^ margin of theoptic cup. Herzog ^ has also found a similar origin in a series of verte-brates. These authors have also studied the development of the dilatorpupillae from the epithe PLATE V.—TYPE III, C.
