GENERAL VIEW OF THE EXHIBITION HALL AT THE S. A. F. CONVENTION, CHICAGO, AUGUST 20-83, 1912. Wm. F. Kasting, of Buffalo, N. Y., submitted his report as treasurer, showing a healthy condition of the finances and satisfactorily and fully accounting for all moneys in his hands. The report was accepted. William F. Gude. Washington rep- resentative of the S. A. F., presented his report, recounting his work in ap- pearing before the house committee on post offices and post roads, and advo- cating a parcel post bill for the mer- chants of the United States at least as good as that accorded to other na- tions, and also in appearing before the sub-committee of the senate commit- tee on post roads, of which Senator Jonathan Bourne, Jr., is chairman. He had also had a conference with Speaker Clark of the house of representatives, wl^om he had found very courteous and apparently favorable to the pro- viding of better postal facilities for the citizens of the United States. Secretary Young:'s Report. The books and other properties per- taining to the secretary's office were turned over by the outgoing secretary early in January. The books were all in good order and accompanied by an inventory covering the property of the society that is in the possession of the secretary. MEMBERSHIP. From January 1, 1912, to August 15, 1912, there has been added to the list the names of 13.5 annual members and 31 life members. Following the rec- ommendations of the board of direc- tors, a circular letter was sent to each name in the Florists' Directory, set- ting forth the advantages of being a member of this society. With this let- ter was enclosed a copy of the official program of this meeting and an invi- tation from the Chicago Trades com- mittee to attend this convention; also an application blank. Very gratifying results are being shown. CONDITION OF THE FINANCES. The finances are in fair condition. The permanent or life membership fund, since the last convention, has been increased by the sum of $1,425. The fees for new members amounted to $390. The permanent fund has ■reached the sum of $11,125.15. TRADE EXHIBITION. The trade exhibition held at the time of the convention is growing in im- portance each year. At Baltimore the receipts of this adjunct, managed by Mack Richmond, were $3,808.05 and the expenditures $1,550.31, the net proceeds turned into the permanent fund of the society being $2,258.19. The present trade exhibition has surpassed any- thing of the kind ever attempted, and the net proceeds should almost double those of the Baltimore convention. It will be well for the members to pause and think of the varied interests and high quality of the exhibits in the main hall. The secretary finds that much of the printed matter and material pur- chased for use at this exhibition can be saved and used again next year. Without question many economies can be practiced for the next convention. TRANSPORTATION. Application for rates was made to all the passenger associations, and re- fused. They will pay no attention to such requests unless an attendance of 1,000 is guaranteed. PLANT REQISTBATION. The following plants have been reg- istered since the last convention: No. 472—September 21, 1911, Be- gonia, "Feastii Bunchii," by Lloyd C. Bunch, Fredonia, Kansas. No. 473—October 7, 1911, Rose, "Ori- ole," by Jackson & Perkins, Newark, N. Y. No. 474—October 7, 1911, Rose, "Genevieve Clark," by Jackson & Perk- ins, Newark, N. Y. No. 47.5—October 7, 1911, Rose, "Sunshine," by Jackson & Perkins, Newark, N. Y. No. 476— October 5, 1911, Rose, "Double Im- proved White Killarney," by S. J. Ren- ter & Son, Westerly, R. I. No. 492— May 11, 1912, Rose, "Killarney Bril- liant," by Robert Scott & Son, Sharon Hill, Pa. No. 477—October 5, 1911, ' Althaea, "Wm. P. Smith," by Henry A. Dreer, Inc., Philadelphia, Pa.
