The territory between the Delaware and Hudson riv-ers, being included in the surrender by the Dutch to the English in 1664,was granted by the duke of York, under the name of New Jersey, to lordBerkeley and Sir George Carteret. They sent over Philip Carteret asgovernor, with a liberal constitution for the new colony, and bountiful of-fers of land to all settlers who would come thither. Lord Berkeley soldhis right, after he had held it ten years, to a company of Quakers, who,wishing to govern separately a region which might be an asylum for thepersecuted of their sect, made an agreement with Carteret, for the parti-tion of the territory. The western portion was assigned to them, theeastern to Carteret. A large company, consisting principally of Quakers,then came from England, and settled in Burling
