the shadow always flees before the look, for which reason the name musca voUtanirs has been given to thisphenomenon. To make certain whether the motion is apparent orreal, we can look at the sky through a window, on which we select amark in order to assure fixation ; after having made a rapid movementwith the look, we fix this point. If the corpuscle is fixed, it shouldthen remain motionless, but most frequently we see it descend slowlywhich indicates that the corpuscle really ascends. J. Burdon-Cooper (Oplifhalmic Rrvu iv, Dec, 1908) linds that iiiuscucan be satisfactorilv studied in the field obtained by using a low power 4328 ENTOPTIC PHENOMENA objective in tlic microscope and placing a liii^h power objective upsidedown on top of llic eye piece. AVith the ordinary condenser and dia-phragm the illumination of thi.s li( Id can l»c adjusted to give thegreatest distinctness of the shadows studied. A more simple but veryserviceable device may be obtained by fusing the end of a capillary

Studyingthe entoptic appearances by this means the strings of beads commoidyregarded as fixed in the vitreous have a movement which Bunion-Cooper thinks argues lor a lymph space existing between the ictinaand hyaloid membrane. Certain double contoured or •tubularshadows are suggested to be due to folds in that membrane. Some of ENTOPTICS 4:i2f) these folds appear to be immediately behind the erystalline lens. Bylying supine, uith the light directly above, he has been able to secthe whole circumference of this opening. He also thinks he has de-tected the posterior end of the canal, considerably larger than theanterior. Ohlemann (Aim. of Ophlh., j). l:Jl. January, IJODj reports a caseof exophth
