Porter, with his war vessels, ar-rived on the 18th, and at once sentup the powder-boat Louisiana, intend-ing to explode her forthwith ; but, onButlers remonstrance that the landforces must be ready to follow np theexplosion with an assault, he counter- •manded the order. It appears thatthe Rebels were not aware of the pre-sence or imminence of the expedi-tion till the 20th—a few vessels moreor less in the offing, where severalblockaders were generally visible, not wearing any special significance. But now, as the wind was high andthe sea rough, with a prospect of stillworse weather, the transports putback YO miles to Beaufort, N. C, forwater, &c.; when a storm ensuedwhich prevented their return till the ^26th. Admiral Porter—who was not on terms of cordiality with Gen. Butler —set to work by himself. The fort and its defend-ers seem to have been nowise dis-turbed by it—Col. Lamb supposingit to be merely the bursting of one ofthe great guns of our fleet. Porter had 33 war vessels, severalof them iron-clad, beside a reserveof 17 small ones. At 11^ a. m., hefollowed up the abortive explosionby an order to advance and bom-bard the fort: the Ironsides leading, closely followed by the Monadnock,Can
