Schofield at St. Louis and Popein the north-west were likewise in-structed respectively to forward toTennessee every man they couldspare. And it now occurred to Hal-leck—or did the day after Chicka-mauga—that two independent com-mands on the Tennessee would notbe so likely to insure effective coope-ration as if one mind directed themovements of both armies; so—Pose-crans being made the necessary scape-goat of others mistakes as well ashis own—Gen. Grant was selectedfor chief command ; Posecrans beingrelieved, and instructed to turn overhis army to Gen. Tliomas. Ilurlbutpromptly put his West Tennesseecorps in motion eastward; but thiswas not enough ; and Ilalleck, onlearnins; of the reverse on the Chick-amauga—hearing nothing from Grantor Sherman—detached the 11thand 12th corps from the Army ofthe Potomac, and ordered them, un-der Gen. Hooker, to Middle Tennes-see, to hold, till further orders, Rose-cranss line of communications fromNashville to Bridgeport. This trans-fer of 20,000 men, with all their ar-tillery, munitions, and baggage, wasmade with remarkable celerity,through the extraordinary exertionsof Gen. D. C. McCallum, govern-ment superintendent of railroads, M.C, Meigs, Quartermaster General, andW. Prescott Smith, master of trans-portation on the Baltimore and Ohioroad : the two corps marching fromthe Rapidan to Washington, takingcars, and being transported by Cum-berland, Wheeling, Cincinna
