is abso-lutely essential for success. The Eastman Kodak Co. havea pamphlet on Color plates and filters for commercialphotography that may be had without cost, and Dr. C. E. K.Mees, the scientific director of the company, has written asmall and very understandable book The Photography ofColored objects that is invaluable to any one interested ingetting proper color renderings in plants, or in any otherobject for that matter. The latter book sells for about fiftycents and is obtainable from any dealer. The WrattenPanchromatic plate and the Wratten filters, also Eastman Com-mercial Panchromatic film are made by the Eastman Company.They will do the work as well as anything on the market atthe present time since they are sensitive to all of the colors,even red, but must be used with the proper light filter. Photographing stained sections or stained objects. It isoften difficult to get sufficient contrast from stained sectionswith the ordinary plates even those that claim to be iso- or 258

Blue or purple stainsare always the hardest to handle, and these tones are very com-mon in sections stained with the so-called triple stain. TheEastman Company makes a plate for this special purposeknown as the Wratten M. Tliis plate is panchromatic,and so must be developed either in darkness or with agreen safe light. It is backed, a great advantage in gettinga brilliant negative. The emulsion is a slow one but as richin silver as a process plate. No special difficulty is experiencedfrom the development in the dark as a few trial exposureswill usually give the right time. Or a special screen for thedark-room light may be obtained from the same company.The proper light filter must be used for the dye with whichthe sections are stained.
