My career as a collector of state capitols is thus dividedsharply into two periods; the early, characterized by anavoidance of the obvious (due to an overplus of theory andunderpins of experience), and the present, in which theproximity of a dome leads automatically to the click of theshutter. State capitols are difficult subjects, since you must see themfrom the same point of view from which everyone else seesthem, and originality of treatment is almost impossible. Nearlyall of them are abundantly domed. At Madison, Wis., theshining white dome dominates a three-cornered structure—three wings radiating from it. The dome is similar to thatof the capitol at Washington—the only closer resemblancethat I know of is the one at Sacramento. My cameravisited Madison on a sunny Sunday, but on the tenth floor ofa near-by office building a room was found open, and fromthe window of this room our view was taken. The anastig- 216

In quaint, historic Sante Fe, the field proved morefavorable. Down the romantic lane habited by the Mexicanmaiden, an air of mystery is lent to the undersized buildingwith its unmistakably tinnish dome. Its neighbor, Olympia, however, resistedhis enchantment, and Washington State has adopted as hercapitol a brown stone building that would pass creditably fora union station. St. Paulboasts an architectural gem; Harrisburg, with all its reputedgraft, is ornately decorated.
