ondout to Kingston Point (Figure 4). This antiquatedferry is owned and operated by an influential resident, andis a highly paying proposition during the height of the touringseason. It is scarcely more than a cables length from shoreto shore—no ferry-house on either side—is operated by a chainby which the boat is pulled across by its own power. The boatscapacity is six average size automobiles, and tourists are obligedto wait in turn often two hours or more before they can getaboard the boat. On each side of the creek leading from thelandings are long, steep and dangerous roads. This view was taken under trying conditions. In order toget in all I wished to make a record picture, I was obligedto take it against the light. I wanted first, the boat, then thelandings on both sides in order to show the shortness of theferry, and, finally, a part of the hilly road on the far side withautomobiles awaiting their turn to cross. I was informed that this summer would see the last of this 180

OQ ro H i8i famons ferry, as a bridge was being built to take care of thetraffic using that road at the present time, and would be inoperation within a year. Views of this sort are the kind that all photographers his-torically inclined should be on the watch for to photographand preserve for posterity. I am glad, to learn that manyhave followed my advice on the matter as pubHshed in theAnnual for 1911, page 45, and many in all parts of the coun-try are now making records of just such subjects.
