left-hand corner andwork diagonally until ending in the lower ight, but no definiterule need be followed. Any procedure that will ink the printevenly is satisfactory. The brush should be freshly chargedrepeatedly by dabbing on the glass, as the main thing is toapply the ink lightly but in the same density. Much has been put in print regarding the application of inkto the print, and a great deal could be added in this article, but owing to the fact that the writer found this operation ofBromoil to vary with instructions, it may be best for thereaders of the Annual to determine their own method. A fewnotes on results obtained and reference to Figure i (Page 53)will give a few ideas of what brushwork will accomplish. The section denoted by A has been pigmented with aheavily charged brush and no attempt made to change theresult. This blocks the shadows and increases the glare ofthe highlights, thereby giving a soot and whitewash effectof extreme contrast. A better result would have been 58

This gives not only a soft effect, but very flat aswell. There is no snap or life as at B. Applying ink as heavily as at A was done at D alsoand hopping resorted to. This is done with a dry brushheld about one inch above the print, then dropped and allowedto rebound when it is caught and dropped again. This actioncan be very quick and soon removes the excess ink from thesurface. A more convenient method is to attach a stiff steelwire to the brush about ten inches long and at right anglesto the handle which affords a means of quick tapping of thebrush. Hopping will produce a grain effect and contrast, but if the action is too severe the gelatine surface will beruined. The trees at section E were hopped in order tolighten the tones and produce the effect of distance. Thesky has not been inked at all except for the slight overlapat the roof o
