ame time effective picture of a childmay be made in the following manner: Take a candle stickholder and a small piece of wood, a portion of a broom stickhandle will serve the purpose admirably. Cover with whitepaper so that it may resemble a candle, and place into the hold-er. Top this artificial candle with a wire bent so that it willaccommodate a small strip of the magnesium ribbon. The in-evitable fear which the burning ribbon inspires may readily beovercome in a manner previously suggested. Holding thecandle stick with its holder in one hand, and shielding theflame with the other, a large variety of striking poses maybe assumed, so many in fact, that a suggestion on my partin that direction would be quite out of place. It might not be amiss here to make a few remarks regard-ing the development of plates taken in this manner. I prefertray development, and as a developing agent I would stronglyrecommend Pyro compounded as follows: A—Water 16 oz. Potassium Metabisulphite 15 gr. 120

SCENTED BOWERS. Kate Smith. Oxalic Acid to s^r. Pyro I oz. In case of crystal pyro the potassium metabisulphite may beomitted and the quantity of oxalic acid increased to 15 gr. B—Water (boiled or distilled) 16 oz. Dry sulphite of soda 2 oz. Hydrometer 60 degrees. C—Water (boiled or distilled) 16 oz. Dry carbonate of soda i oz. Hydrometer 30 degrees.For use mix as follows: A—I oz. B—I oz. C—I oz. Water between 60 and 70 degrees about 10 oz. Develop the negative up to within a fraction of complete development. This is done for the purpose of obtaining a certain degree of softness and delicacy in modeling of the lights and shades so essential to pictures of this character. During the warm months the developer should either be used colder, i. e., 55 or 60 degrees, or a greater amount of water should be used. During the winter months it should be used with either less water or a higher temperature, say between 60 and 70 degrees. Increasing the bulk of water slows down developmen
