ter reduction can be brought about by working inthe same way on the right side of the print, and due to therough texture of the paper the work will not show. In the in-stance of a portrait of a person with dark hair against a darkbackground, when the head seems to be lost in the back-ground, the print can be remedied by putting it face down onthe ground glass of a retouching frame, where we can usuallysee the outline of the head. Then with the white pencil theoutline can be traced, giving a very faint line on the right sideof the print, indicating the desired separation. The whitepencil can also be used on the surface of the print, but greatcare and judgment must be used not to overdo it. Use the stomp on the surface of the print where you cannotuse the cotton and where broad lines are desired, lead dust isused in connection with the stomp. The monotony of whitebackgrounds can be easily overcome by the use of lead dustand cotton, rubbing this into the back or surface of the print. 154

HWW < CO W w s iSS My illustrations show the kind of prints that can be madeon this wonder paper, and they were made from all sorts ofnegatives, ranging from the very soft to the hardest. My Lou is printed from a negative which when heldup to the light shows very little and most of us would discardthe negative as worthless, but there again Artatone withoutany manipulation, except that the negative was held abouttwelve feet from light, gives me a print that is soft andbeautiful, with the qualities that pictorial workers so much de-sire, and which many are striving for. The negative holds upunder the printing light because it is pyro developed. Wonder Eyes shows all the daintiness that is wanted inchild portraiture. Here white clothes were helped by thepencil on the eyes and the mouth and yet it is not evident. Smiling Dan shows just the opposite of WonderEyes. The background is black, ruggedness is expressed, theblacks are rich, the features show the modeling strongly, thetexture of
