Last spring just previous to the opening of the 250th anni-versary of the founding of Newark I was asked to go toPrinceton, N. J., and make two views of the battlefield toillustrate The Battlefields of New Jersey. 162 The day selected was fine when I left Newark, but by thetime I arrived at Princeton the wind came up strong and in anhours time reached the proportions of a gale. Hgwever, Icontinued on my journey to the battlefield. This took meabout forty-five minutes to reach by walking, following thedirections given me by a policeman, when, if I had onlyknown it beforehand, I could have taken a trolley to within sixhundred feet of where I wanted to go. It was poorly located to be taken fromthe road and after studying it for a while I played safe byinquiring at the house if there would be any objections to mygoing inside the grounds. There was none, so I took Figure i.Moving on I came to Figure 2. This was in such an ex-posed place that I was unable to take it owing to the strongwind. Afterwards I took this on my way back, but wasforced to make use of my shoulder strap, which I attached tothe tripod head, placing my foot in a loop on the other end. I 163 had not bettered conditions any by leaving it, as the wind wasblowing at the rate of forty miles an hour, and it was thenlate in the afternoon. Figure 3 is the true front of the Hale house where GeneralMercer was taken after being wounded. This was easy toobtain as I was sheltered from the wind by outbuildings.
