Of course it is oftenimportant to photograph trees and shrubs in foliage, flowerand fruit, or, when bare, to show their habit of growth; butI do not class such prints under flower photography. So faras the individual flower is concerned they have no value. A room with eastern and northern windows is desirable.Cross-lights which are so objectionable in portrait photographyare helpful in bringing out the forms and details more clearly.Have as little furniture in the room as possible and a barefloor—carpets are dust holders. I prefer to photograph inthe morning from lo A. M. to 12 M., on clear days. In order to photograph flowers natural size a camera witha bellows having an extension of twenty-two to twenty-fourinches is required. The editor of Camera-Craft says: Toget a picture natural size of an object you must rack the lensout to double its focal length and the flowers must be a likedistance from the lens. MORNING MIST. Kate Smith. simply want a camera with an extension equal to twice thefocal length of the lens. That is all there is to it. Or to turnit around, all you need is a lens that has a focal length a littleless than half the extension of the camera. Do not scrimpon your camera but buy one having all the various adjust-ments. An expensive lens is not necessary, although it pos-sesses some advantages in speed and depth. A rectilinearlens costing fourteen or fifteen dollars will answer everypurpose. Use plates and have three or four plate holders. A5x7 plate is the best for flower photography. Smaller platescan be used and enlargements made, but this method willhardly commend itself to the beginner, moreover, much of thefiner detail is Hkely to be lost. A 5 x 7 plate will be foundlarge enough for most flowers, and is in many other ways themost convenient size.
