Text Appearing Before Image:
even in the rush of ourpresent-day complex existence we can achieve not a little peaceand rest for our eyes by freeing ourselves from the meaninglessaccumulations with which our homes are too frequently littered. One of the classics of American literature was written in ashack built by Thoreau himself on Walden Pond. He wasthe pioneer of the simple life—a term hackneyed but difficultto replace by any other appellation—and like many philosophershe was an extremist. But one cannot read Walden withouta feehng of disgust for the artificiality and the insincerity inthe furnishings of the average home of today. It is a pleasure to see that photography, simple, direct, neverpretending to be anything but what it is, is taking a place onour walls, demonstrating that these spaces can be adornedwithout offending the canons of good taste, and in their appealto all that is beautiful bring us to a better understanding of thejoy that may be ours in acquiring a genuine love for natureand art. 132
