ents. When circumstances permit the image may be focused onthe screen with the aid of a focusing glass, but it is not wiseto attempt it with the naked eye, far better to rely on onesjudgment of the distance and focus by a trustworthy scale. Another cause of trouble is movement of the camera dur-ing exposure, and this is more frequent than might at first be 6s supposed. To keep a tiny camera still for an exposure of i/ioto 1/50 of a second is more difficult than with a camera ofheavier build, and the slightest movement shows simply be-cause we are not making negatives to print by contact but toenlarge many times. Some sort of support should be used forthe camera whenever possible and as a larger aperture may beused than for a camera of larger and consequently heavierbuild it seems poetic justice that a quicker exposure is moreoften possible. But if the little camera is weak in the slower instantaneousspeeds (and of course if a firm support is provided for the immmmmmSmlit^ *^- >«av

To havea shutter working up to 1/300 of a second is useful on occa-sions (Figure i), and there is something particularly satis-factory about using these higher speeds when permissible. 66
