Text Appearing Before Image:
we have thefour bridges. There are still some possibilities in photograph-ing the spans from the river front, a little different than hasalready been done. I think, however, there are new possibili-ties in the approaches, piers, and masonry work, showing thearches and vistas. Going further up town on the west side there is GreenwichVillage, which is full of pictorial material with the quainthouses, picturesque doorways, iron fences, and crooked narrowstreets lined on each side with dilapidated buildings in whichonce resided the aristocrats a few generations back, but nowoccupied by foreigners most of whom still dress intheir nativecostume. Crossing to the east side we may also run across some oldtime mansions, but it is the street scenes in the Ghetto thatwill interest us most. In that section certain streets are givenover to push cart venders who always make picturesque sub-jects, especially if treated in an original way. In midtown our subjects are more modern, but full of pic- 204
Text Appearing After Image:
UNDER THE MUNICIPAL BUILDING. Illustrating article Picturesque New York, by William H. Zerbe. 205 torial possibilities nevertheless. The public Library, the newrailroad terminal, a few of the hotels, and some of the smalltheatres—I might mention the Little Theatre, and the Punchand Judy Theatre—as holding out some possibilities. Further uptown we come to Columbia University Libraryand Grants Tomb. Of the former I have seen several hun-dred different views, among which were some real works o.fart, and I am satisfied there are a good many more oppor-tunities there that can be done in an original way. In my list I have only mentioned well known subjects, feel-ing sure if you get started in this line you will soon discoversubjects that you will be able to do in a way that will be differ-ent from the usual thing, and, therefore, be more appealingto one who likes to see real pictures. What has been said of New York City will apply to any cityor town in this country. Select your subjects
