There are many examples ex-hibiting complete success in all this in Doctor Hollands workmentioned above, and Plate XX. in it will exemplify my de-scription as well as any of them. In some of the forty-eightplates, all in color, there are occasional slips; but these may beexpected where the illustrations are so numerous, and thetechnique of such a difficult character. In some of the platesit has been aimed to incorporate flowers and parts of plants asaccessory features, and in most instances unusual success hasbeen attained in such attempts. Now, in the photography of living specimens of butterflies,we may be influenced by quite a number of factors that aresure to be met with in every operation. These may be more orfewer, owing to the nature of each individual case, and thecharacter of the particular specimen of which the negative isdesired.
