negative should be sharpeverywhere. Fuzzy, soft or out-of-focus effects are not pleas-ing, in fact they are very irritating. In making the prints there are one or two points that shouldbe kept in mind. In the first place the prints must be fully \ Figure 2. exposed and somewhat flat and much too dark when examinedwithout the stereoscope. If of normal character, in nine casesout of ten the picture in the scope will appear as though every-thing was covered with snow. Soft working, so-called pro-fessional papers are best, and above all things one musteschew any fancy surface. The Velvet or studio surfacesare the most satisfactory. It is important that the prints be properly trimmed, spaced, and put in their right positions, for the left eye must see thepicture taken by the lefthand lens and the right eye that takenby the righthand lens. If this position be reversed then theresult is not stereoscopic relief, but pseudoscopic, that is to say, distant objects appear in front of near ones. 234
Text Appearing After Image:
fx5 wm >I—I w W fin< 235 It is very easy to grasp the need of reversion if Figure i iscarefully studied. Let A represent the object, B will then bethe negative of the same and C the print. Obviously the lefteye print would in this condition be seen by the right eye, which is wrong. To set this right is very easy when you know how, but it isvery easy to make a muddle of it. Place the print face downon the table, with the top away from you and across thedividing line draw a light pencil line as shown in Figure 2.Now cut down the dividing line and turn the prints over sothat the pencil lines come on the outside of the prints, and itwill at once be seen that the prints are in their right positions.
