o on. A camera should be purchased not be-cause admirable work may be produced with it, but because itis going to fit in with the amateurs natural habits and way oflife. There is still another consideration which should weigh withthe prospective purchaser. If one expects his interest in pho-tography to increase as time goes on, he should not try tocombine too many virtues in the camera which he buys, butrather to look at it as one of several instruments which he willultimately own. For example, suppose one fancies a 5 x 7view camera and a 3^ x 4j4 film camera. It would be verypoor policy to split the difference and purchase a foldingcamera of the 4x5 size. In a very short time the 4x5 wouldbe too small for one purpose and too big for the other. Amuch better plan in this case would be to choose between thesmall film camera and the view, getting the one which bestsuits present needs and leaving the other for purchase later asmeans permit. The final suggestion seems so obvious that it is made withsome hesitation, but it may be of assistance to a beginner hereand there. Pictures as they appear in the various magazinesare seldom a safe guide for determining what size camera isto be preferred. The two pictures accompanying this article(Figures i and 2), for example, might seem to indicate thevalue of working in the larger sizes, but they dont indicateanything of the sort. The reproductions in both cases arefrom enlargements, the original negatives being small and onlyparts of them used. On the other hand, the uninitiated willfind in the magazines and indeed in this book many small pic-ttires reproduced from contact prints as large as 8 x 10.
