ly crossed by the lines of the furniture. As white or light garments are best always for inside pic-tures, medium colored or darker garb is preferable for out-of-doors. Nor does full sunlight usually assist toward the bestchild photographs. If the sun is bright and the picture mustbe taken that day, choose a place on the shady side of a build-ing, but where the top-light is not cut off and slightly increasethe exposure. More than anywhere else, remember that inchildrens pictures the exposure must be for the shadows inthe faces. That pretty pink sunbonnet will quite blot all ex-pression from the little girls eyes, and the shadow Df the kitewill be just as unkind to the boys features unless this rule iskept in mind. On the beach or water or in the snow therewill be a compensating reflection from beneath, but here theopposite peril of over-exposure must be kept in mind. Formost out-of-door pictures of children a day when the sun issomewhat hazed and when an exposure of one-tenth of a 270
Text Appearing After Image:
271 second to one-twenty-fifth is about correct, will be found mostadvantageous. There is one sort of picture of children, which may be takenout-of-doors and which gives unusually attractive results, wherein the conditions advised for indoors are followed. Thisis invariably to be taken in the shade of the house or otherbuilding, but with the top lights unobstructed. The child isseated in a white chair, of as near its own size as possible, clothed in white garments and with either white shoes or noshoes at all. The background, too, must be white, and forthis purpose a blanket with no creases serves best. Care mustbe exercised against shadows falling upon the background. Aslightly prolonged exposure, soft focus and somewhat lessthan full development give the best results. This is, in fact, one of the few situations for which other than normal develop-ment is to be advised. In finishing the prints vignetting issometimes desirable. The plan may hardly be tried with suc-cess with a child too
