made a start, but I am satisfied that righthere we have pictorial material that is as attractive, or more so,than the Old World pictures. To make them so, however, wemust treat our subjects in a different manner than we areaccustomed to see them on post cards, or real estate advertise-ments. Building and street scenes, for instance, require somestudy in the selection and proper lighting, as well as takingthem under proper atmospheric conditions. We see certainscenes so often that we never think to seek their pictorialpossibilities. There are hundreds of subjects which we pass daily thatwould lend themselves to real pictures if a little study weregiven to the selection and viewpoint, as well as light conditions.We too often try to include too much in our picture space, andtake it at a time when we happen to be there, instead of study-ing our subject to find out what light and atmospheric condi-tions are best suited for it. Some subjects may requirea medium for fine detail while others may require a mediumthat gives breadth, or sketchy effects, such as gum, oil or car-bon. The mistake usually made is to portray them in a waythat is familiar to every one with the result that they do notmake them appear as pictures. If a building, do not think it necessary to include the wholeof it. Perhaps a doorway, or entrance, in a vista would lookbetter than the whole. It is not our desire to advertise thebuilding, but to make a picture for the sake of a picture only,not caring where, when, or how it was made. If our picturespace contains something that is pleasing in lines and masses,we need have no worry where the location is.
