that tend to increase or decrease the exposure indi-cated by the meter. The photographic film or plate is moresensitive to some colors than others; a close view requires alonger exposure than a distant one; and the density of theshadows is of utmost importance, but as stated before, metersand tables allow for full shadow detail, and can be relied onto do so except where the shadows are unusually dark. Too much exposure tends to give a flat negative, while toolittle gives a contrasty, and in many cases, worthless one. Theinstruction book coming with the Premo C Camera recom-mends an exposure of i/ioo of a second at U.S. 8 in brightsunlight. If a meter is used, such an exposure will never beindicated, in fact the meter will never show less than i/iooat 4 at mid-day in summer, and usually more than this. Onthe other hand, exposure tables given in Photo Era and otherphotographic magazines give a still greater exposure than thatshown by meters, and one using these tables can rely on ex- 96

In the case of the writer, developing has been done in a tank, but instead of using a whole powder as per directions, thepowder has been divided into equal parts (by estimation), andonly one part used at a time, the development being carried onfor the same time as for the whole powder. One might thinkthat the negatives would come out thin and under-developed,but instead they possess good density, perfect shadow detail, and make as good prints as could be desired. This might bepartly attributable to the fact the temperature was taken be-fore putting the film cage into the tank, and that the increaseof temperature would reduce the correct time for development. In some cases, this raises the temperature as much as fivedegrees in hot weather, but it does not have much effect inwinter. In recent experiments made for the purpose of comparingthis method of developing with the ordinary, for different
