le in-teresting, is extremely difficult work. The constant play ofpowerful searchlights about the harbor requires the operatorto be ever on his guard to prevent the rays entering the lensand thus ruining the plate. If the ships are found at rest andilluminated, the exposure should be from ten to fifteen min-utes. Railroad Yards: The night photographer invariably turnshis steps in the direction of the red and green lanterns, beforehe has been operating a great while. The hiss of steam andthe gleaming rail have a peculiar effect upon most persons. Patience and agility of foot (lest you leave one of thembehind!) are the important requirements here. Because ofthe usual brilliant illumination an exposure of ten minutesmay be safely given. Locomotives may appear in the pictureproviding they are not in motion. Churches: This is an unusually pleasing subject and not atall difficult. Make the exposure when the service is in progressand the building lighted, giving about half an hour. Ortho- 42

IN WINTERS GRASP. EDWIN J. WHITE. chromatic plates are required to take care of the colored lightsin the stained-glass windows. Pyrotechnics: This is more of a novelty than anything, butas the lovers of the spectacular may be interested a little spacewill be given to the subject. Personally, I can see no beautyin a tangle of white streaks, curved or otherwise. However, the camera should be set up at some distance from the mad-ding crowd, to avoid collisions, and the plate exposed untilseveral bursting bombs have appeared in the view. Thecamera should be tilted upward so that the heads of the spec-tators will not appear in the foreground. Development: The development of the night photograph isall-important. There is as much latitude in the choice of de-velopers here as in all other branches of photography. Theindividual favorites are many, running from the amateursfamiliar Metol-Hydrochinon to the professionals trusty Pyro.It is advisable to use the developer recommended by the makerof
