When the roll of twelve negatives of the quarter-plate orpostcard size comes to hand its length is so great that onemust have truly collossal arms to develop it by the usual run-ning of it into and out of the tray, holding it with one end ineach hand. Two alternatives present: Slice it in two in themiddle and develop each half separately, or put the wholefilm into the tank. In the former case it is best to unroll thefilm only to the figure 7 on the cover paper, leaving thesecond half rolled up until needed to prevent fog. In thelatter case the strength of the tank developer can be regulatedto permit the films being finished about the time that one,two or more other shorter films have been manipulated inthe tray. 286

In the case of film-pack films, the film-pack tank is undeniably the best methodof handling them, doubling the strength of the developer tohalf the time if time is at a premium. If, however, the traysystem is used it will be found that the difticulty of handlingthese films is materially reduced if they are thoroughly soakedin a tray of clear water before being slid into the developer.When placed in the latter they can be more easily kept frommatting together by laying every other film at right angles toits predecessor. If all of a dozen films are slipped into thedeveloper within half a minute the factorial method, with thetime taken of first appearance on the first negative inserted,may be employed.
