he former works well. It will be noted that I have omitted the bromide in thenegative developer, although plate makers advise it. It isquite unnecessary, as all plates now work clean without it andit only slows the plate, and in snapshot and portrait work thisis a serious handicap. I do not wish to imply that there is anything magical inthis particular combination, or that it will enable any one toturn out pictures every time. Only I have found it satisfac-tory and it is adjustable, like every other developer, to allclasses of work, when you know how to use it, and I knowthis thoroughly. Herein lies the secret of successful work—knowing your tools. A man who is constantly chopping andchanging his plates, his developer and printing materials can-not possibly turn out good work always, for every time he hasa factor that he is not perfectly familiar with and which wantslearning—and plates, developers and papers all have theiridiosyncrasies, which the successful worker must learn. 176
