These foils must be rendered in such a way that they donot obtrude themselves, else we have a division of interestwith the inevitable unrest of the mind perplexed in its effortto make out what the whole matter is about. This is not saying that the foils shall not be of like qualitywith the main object, in fact, they must be in harmony withit. But they must ever be subordinate thereto and this may besecured either with variation of tone (aerial perspective),intensity, or arrangement. This plea has nothing to do with fine definition as such. Ifthe subject be best rendered with that sharpness of focus thatdelights the tyro or the ancient who has never waked up, letsharpness be present. If the subject can best be treated withbroad masses, treat it so, always remembering there must beenough in those masses to tell the story, and detail sufficient toso link them together that the complete effect will be devoidof that spottiness which is ever wearying. 136
