Think of the advantages to be derived from a photographwhen any disputed point arises, as it often does, in the struc-ture of an organism. One observer says he sees a certainformation, while another sees something quite different. Thepoint of focus, nay, even the illumination, may make all thedifference, and without tangible evidence in support of onescontention a verbal dispute may continue indefinitely. Herea picture of the matter in question at once puts the disputantson common ground, tells if they are taking the same stand-point, and enables them to join issue in a rational way oragree on the cause of divergent opinions. The same may besaid of geological and botanical specimens and numerous otherobjects which are often required by teachers and students. The negatives too can be used not only for prints but forlantern slides, a powerful aid in school work. A lecturer who relies on mere diagrams is at a distinct dis-advantage compared with one who puts a fine photograpliicillustration on the screen.
