ass lens (for such I termed it)and I did not do any great things with it. I succeeded inmaking some pictures which pleased my artistic sense verywell, two of which met with the success previously mentioned. The portrait (Frances, Figure i) is the picture which wassent in the representative collection of the N. W. P. A. Theone titled Bess (Figure 2) was made with a piece of blackpaper with a smaller hole in it used like a stop and showsbetter detail. Full aperture of the lens was used in the land-scape study The Brook (Figure 3), and it shows evidencesof all the aberrations and isms and such diseases which lensesare heir to. 141 It may not seem that I accomplished a great deal in work-ing with this simple apparatus, but I did get great pleasure,with no little food for thought, on the theories of lens action,and much satisfaction at seeing the production of such meagreequipment passed upon so highly in comparison with produc-tions of the best cameras and lenses of the Pacific Northwest.
