ution; or theirformation can be prevented by adding alcohol in the firstplace. Since I conducted a series of tests and found that bymixing the sodium sulphite and the sodium carbonate inti-mately in the dry state before adding them to the duratolsolution no precipitation of crystals results, I have had notrouble whatever. In the spring of 1913 Mr. Livingston Mason, of Newport,R. L, called my attention to the use of potassium metabisul-phite as an agent for preserving duratol and hydrochinon andallowing the use of a two-solution developer. I have sincethat time experimented incessantly, and now use exclusivelythe following formula, which is arranged for easy weighing, dispensing with the use of odd drams and grains. A. Water (cold) 32 ounces Potassium metabisulphite 60 grains Dissolve and add Duratol 30 grains Hydrochinon 90 grains B. Water 32 ounces Sodium sulphite, anhydrous i^ ounces Sodium carbonate, anhydrous 2 ounces In making up, dissolve the metabisulphite completely in cold 108

The developing agents can be addedseparately or together, and will dissolve in about a minute ifwell stirred. Filter, make up to 32 ounces, and bottle. TheB solution, if made up with water containing lime salts, willthrow down calcium carbonate and calcium sulphate on stand-ing. When this happens I filter it and it remains perfectlyclear to the last drop. No change whatever occurred in anA solution exposed to sunlight in a loosely corked bottle forsix months. I use Metropolitan water, which is very hard;but have no trouble if I filter tank developer after mixing.I do not bother with filtering for a tray solution. This developer is as near a good universal solution as any-thing I have tried. In some cases, complaints of fog areheard; but this is always due to improper proportion of sul-phite. Piper and Mees pointed out some time ago that ahydrochinon developer would give sulphit
