I had noone to blame for my disaster. The exposures had all been most carefully timed, and I hadevery confidence in their correctness, as I had made trial expo-sures under varying conditions before leaving home and ar-rived at the right exposure for such subjects as I was likelyto require. On my return I commenced developing the batchwithout loss of time, using the pyro-soda developer now sowell known as the B. J. pyro-soda formula. Six plateswere placed in a tray and developed. The average time ofdevelopment was six minutes, and when the first six weretaken from the fixing bath I knew that I had no reason tofeel further uneasiness. The exposures were correct, and the negatives perfectlysharp and of fine quality. I took no duplicates on the journey, and every plate was usable; that is to say, several requiredafter treatment of some kind to enable them to give satisfac-tory results. My paper envelopes seemed so inconsequentialafter long years of mahogany slides that I was constantly 12

The batch having been developed carbon transparencieswere made by printing them in sets of four and afterwardscutting them to their correct size. The negatives requiredwere then made by enlargement in the enlarging camera, andwere satisfactory in all respects. If there had been any falling off in quality of this Dartmoorseries when compared with other series taken in the time-honored professional manner I should have accounted myexperiment a failure. For this reason, and for my futureguidance, I sat in the severest judgment on the finished prod-uct and could find it wanting in no respect. Of its marketvalue I have fortunately no doubt. Since the publication ofthe series it has been in constant demand on all hands, and theverdict of the general public is after all a pretty sound one; atleast when one caters for them it is the verdict
