In drawing class I had learned to see things in masses, andto look for forms rather than detail. In the study of com-position my teacher told me that good balance was obtainedby opposing in their proper relationship forms, or masses oflight and shade, or of color. I had also learned somethingabout subduing the distant planes into more or less obscure 140

All ofthese ideas made the product of my R. R. lens rather unsatis-factory from an artistic standpoint, and induced me to studyhow I might obtain the soft artistic effects such as I saw re-produced in the magazines. I tried racking my R. R. lens out of focus and made a fewstudies. I did not like the effect. It was not the kind ofsoftness I desired. I simmered them down some by printingthrough tissue paper, and such things, but that still didnt givethe result. Just at that time a friend gave me an old enlarg-ing box and led by my curiosity I took it to pieces, presumablyto see what it was made of. Inside of it I found a simpleconvex lens an inch and a half in diameter which I discoveredwould form an image if held between eight and nine inchesfrom a white cardboard. The idea naturally occurre
