cy. The plateused should be slow, and by selecting the plate and developerfor contrast or softness, the range or key of the Autochromemay even be improved in the process. Certain it is that theillusory something we call atmosphere is preserved in astriking degree, and yet clouds and foliage come out as ifthe ray screen and color sensitive plate had been broughtinto requisition. In spite of the oft-repeated charges of narrow range ofexposure for Autochromes, the writer has again and againsucceeded in retaining filmy clouds in a blue sky, and inbringing out in the same plate detail in heavy shadows of rocksand trees. With a good Autochrome in your hands, the limitations oftime and distance are overcome. You may, at your leisure,and in your own laboratory, experiment with plates, ex-posures and developers, until you are satisfied and your resultsare likely to be finer than if you had started out by makinga regular, plain negative, or a dozen of them for that matter,from the scene itself.
