n reason. Thehalf of an R.R. lens makes a good landscape-objective, thoughan extra long focus doublet should be chosen in order to getsufficient covering power. Of special lenses, there are theSmith (Pinkham & Smith Semi-Achromatic) and the Port-land (Spencer Lens Co.), both of which are specifically de-signed to give a soft vibrating image full of spherical abberra-tion. Among the anastigmats, the Cooke is peculiar in that theextension-lenses allow one to introduce some spherical error byopening the iris to its greatest diameter. Thus a 16-inch exten-sion intended to work at F. 16 gives a beautiful quality whenopened to F. 11. More error can be introduced by unscrewingthe front lens a trifle after focusing. Regarding the choice of a shutter, any type will do if it canbe conveniently fitted. Probably the old reliable behind thelens roller-blind type is one of the best, particularly as allones lenses may be fitted to extra front-panels and theray-screen mounted on the lens-hood. 96

LATE AFTERNOON. WILLIAM H. KUNZ ANDMALCOLM DEAN MILLER, M. D. (May 14, 4:30 P.M., faint sun, F.ll, 1/5 sec, Def. D. C. Ortho.. 16 Smith Lens.) There is undoubtedly a special advantage in the Sky-shade shutter, a type which solves the problem of securingclouds and foregrounds in one exposure, even on plain plates.Unfortunately, it is made only in small sizes at present. Thehigh efficiency of the focal-plane shutter, of course, makes itvery useful on windy days to stop movement in trees. Theplate to use depends largely on the season. In spring, iso.or ortho. plates are necessary to record the light tones ofthe yellow-green foliage. In the summer when the leaves areblue-green, the plain bromide plate, fully exposed, will oftengive better rendering, because it records all the ultra-violetand blue-violet reflected from the landscape, thus compen-sating for its deficient sensitiveness to blue-green. The iso.plate, particularly if used with a filter, often requires double ortriple normal exp
