To-daythe most experienced workers will tell you toobtain, first of all, a correct exposure, and thedevelopment will largely take care of itself.Admitting that correct exposure is a thing very much to bedesired, the question comes as to how to attain this ideal. DiflFerent workers certainly have quite different methodsof determining the proper exposure for a given subject. Thepainstaking amateur is almost sure to go forth armed with anexposure-meter which is to tell him just what to do under allconditions. He is too apt to depend entirely upon his meterfor arriving at the correct exposure without giving enoughchance for his reason to exercise itself. On the other hand, there are many professional workerssuccessful with all kinds of subjects, under the most difficultconditions, who never use a meter of any sort. Such a workerrelies upon his judgment, based on a wide experience, togetherwith his memory of previous exposures. Now and then we 88
