gives a suggestionof stability and firmness, it is easy to secure and is capable ofalmost endless variety. This triangular arrangement (Fig. i) is very common andcan be observed in many portraits in which both hands areshown, but by reason of its possibility of variation it neednever become monotonous. It is, however, by no means theonly possible arrangement. In the picture of the two boysreading the paper (Fig. 2) it will be seen that a line connect-ing the hands and arms takes a circular form. This is an-other shape that is often satisfying as a line composition.Like the triangle, it forms a design that is complete in itselfand one that fits well into the picture space. Another very common and often satisfactory arrangementis to have one hand supporting the head (Fig. 3). Thisserves a useful purpose in helping to steady the sitter so thatthere will be less risk of movement when a long exposurehas to be given. In arranging the hands and arms the utmosttact and care must be used. 166
Text Appearing After Image:
Fig. 2.Illustrating Article The Hands in Portraiture, by Arthur Hammond. With many sitters it is impossible to avoid self-conscious-ness and the stiffness and woodenness that will be the inev-itable result if any posing be attempted. It is best, as a rule, never to touch the sitter; just make suggestions and let himpose himself or, better still, leave the sitter entirely aloneand be on the watch for a pleasing and characteristic attitude. Many people when engaged in conversation and when theyhave forgotten all about the camera, will often assume aphotographable pose which, being assumed quite uncon-sciously, is bound to be natural and characteristic, and themore natural and characteristic the pose, the more will theresulting picture be likely to be regarded as a speakinglikeness.
