The curious attracts them unfailingly. An especialjoy is to perpetuate the appearance of their friends at theirworst. The artistic possibilities—the capabilities of thephotographic process for the making of pictures are an un-worked vein of precious metals lying all about them. Therules of composition, tones, placing of masses, atmosphere areentirely neglected tools for the mining of all this wealth. There are numerous aims which may be chosen by theamateur, any one of which is better than none. As we areconsidering the amateur we presuppose that the pleasurederived from the hobby is the ruling motive—hence money-making may be left out of the question. If this be taken asan object, the hobby is converted into work. The recordingof facts is an aim that may be adopted, and one which has a 54
