printedfor amateurs by the professional finishers. The sinful wasteof good paper to make prints that mean absolutely nothingshows plainly that the button pressers had no definite objectin view. The curious attracts them unfailingly. An especialjoy is to perpetuate the appearance of their friends at theirworst. The artistic possibilities—the capabilities of thephotographic process for the making of pictures are an un-worked vein of precious metals lying all about them. Therules of composition, tones, placing of masses, atmosphere areentirely neglected tools for the mining of all this wealth. There are numerous aims which may be chosen by theamateur, any one of which is better than none. As we areconsidering the amateur we presuppose that the pleasurederived from the hobby is the ruling motive—hence money-making may be left out of the question. If this be taken asan object, the hobby is converted into work. The recordingof facts is an aim that may be adopted, and one which has a 54

Recording places and objects seen whiletraveling would be included in the work of such an amateur.He would want the best optical outfit to be had, plates of agenerous size, and would probably print on glossy paper. Hiswork would be of moderate—not engrossing—interest, and hisprints would be looked at only casually. Usually his camerawill be idle 50 weeks out of 52, and after a few years, storedin the attic or sold. The aim which the writer believes will render photographythe most educative, the most intensely interesting, the richestin results both as to prints and as to culture, is the pictorial.Let us persuade a hitherto thoughtless snapshotter to seriously,consciously, definitely adopt the pictorial as his aim.
