Text Appearing Before Image:
willshow the carving best. Even here do not forget the relation ofthe pedestal to the top. (See illustration No. i). Had one ofthe graven images been straight front, the carving wouldhave looked more elaborate, but the whole pedestal wouldhardly have been covered by the top and the photo been absurd, although it is a large top. Ordinarily I try to make the wholelook symmetrical—see illustrations No. 2 and No. 3, whichare posed to show equally the four legs. The proprietorstaste is the final law, nevertheless the above considerations ofproportion and symmetry produce that indefinable somethingwhich makes the picture a success. Now let us put on the top. The top and apron are sawedin two parts for extension. Do not place the top with thiscut endwise to the lens so that it will show. They will reject itevery time if it does. Notwithstanding, you can get finereffects in the grain by placing the wood endwise to the camera, see that the top is level. By the way, no tops are fastened on. 132
Text Appearing After Image:
Co l^ sO ^ Co Measure the top on each side from the pedestal. The eyewill not be correct enough. A quarter of an inch will showit one-sided. Have your furniture man run his hand up thepedestal to where he wants the top to cut it off, then whileyou look through the camera have him shove the top fronttill it cuts off right. This and height of the camera will givethat low, massive appearance so loved by salesmen. I get thelens of my camera 5 feet from the floor, and it is 26-inch focus.Lighting. Have a large white muslin cloth to cover the floor
