Unless there are green or dark objects in the subject whichare against the light, ordinary plates are best for seashorephotography, as otherwise the sky may be over-corrected.Medium plates are best and they should be backed. In high and breaking wave photography (not merely sea-shore photographs) the shutter speed should not be greaterthan 1/75 to i/ioo seconds. For running water the speedshould be about 1/5 to i/io seconds in order to secure theeffect of motion. A hand camera is better for photographing sea waves andthe lens should be kept covered up to the moment of exposureto prevent its being clouded with mist. A rectangular viewfinder is best. The camera should be held in both hands andthe bulb may often be held in the teeth. If a tripod is used,a thin piece of glass may be fastened over the lens withrubber bands to keep the spray off while composing thepicture on the ground glass, and it may be removed long
