No one will claim for a momentthat all of these results can be obtained by any photographicprocess. It is true, and it should, however, be borne in mind thatfor the faithful copying of a bit of nature, landscape ormarine, that the camera is a faithful servant, a good copyist,an able statistician, but in such a copy the personal interpreta-tive element is wholly lacking. It is also true that some moods of nature, such as a finecloud effect, a coming storm, a marine view with the so-called night effect, is oftentimes rendered in such a manneras to invite the admiration of the ablest painter. Such results,however, are but the truthful realism of the copyist, and whilethe painter may not hope to equal them, it is for the reasonthat the conditions are so rare and often so transitory thatthe easel could hardly be located before the condition haspassed away. 256

MADELEINE. ALCIDE PINARD. In portraiture the product of the camera is many times asevere disappointment. Of its truth it is hardly proper toquestion, but the feehng remains that the sitter has beenphotographed with an expression or pose that seems whollyunnatural. The results are therefore lacking in that pleasingquality, that interpretative analysis obtained by the skilledportrait painter who has learned the moods of his model, andin his selection has portrayed the sitter at his best. The difficulty with much of the photography of the presentwhen compared with other arts is that the photograph includes 257 too much, the interest is therefore divided, and often thereis great difficulty in determining the dominant point of in-terest or the motive of the picture. Inasmuch as the faculty of elimination is denied to mostof the users of the camera, for the reason that eliminationmeans skilful after manipulation of the negative after de-velopment, it is important that more care should be gi
