OR the pictorial worker no piece of apparatusis more important than an efficient shutter. Theordinary shutters, however, have one gravefault—they give as much exposure to the skyas to the foreground. Now, the sky is, as ageneral thing, lo to 12 times as luminous as the foreground;hence this equal exposure overtimes the sky and gives pictureshaving a blank white or bald-headed sky—quite untrue tonature. The earlier landscape workers, recognizing this limit-ation of photography, either printed in clouds from a separatenegative or chose subjects in which most of the interest layin the foreground. Later the introduction of isochromaticplates and ray filters allowed the artist to get clouds andforeground on one plate at the expense of a greatly increasedexposure; but even this method has been found defective, as 224

These screens will do the work, but their limitation, the increase of exposure needed, makesthem inapplicable when there is much wind. The sky-shade shutter is free from the defects referred toand has several great advantages over other devices. In thefirst place, it can be used with plain plates (many pictorialworkers prefer the non-orthochromatic effect), and will givethe sky in its correct luminosity, as the foreground receivesabout five times as much exposure as the sky portion. Inthe second place, those who prefer iso plates can use thesky-shade shutter without a screen for rapid exposures, or inaddition to the screen when more time can be given, in thelatter case getting the benefit of full
