GRATACAP. ing crests of sea-green waves plunging in from turquoisedepths; a palm waves over your head, and directly oppositeyou the life-plant makes a fringe along the gray summit ofa wall; here is a picturesque and scrambling crust of huts,and within a stones throw is the ocean, calm, unruffled, floor-ing the rounded earth to the girdling horizon with the deepestsapphire; now the darkening shadows and the flashing high-lights on some poinciana tree tempts your skill, and anonthe pavement of waters where the light is reflected, paling inplaces its oriental blueness, while lapping the coves, bays andindentations of the shore under cavernous ledges of cellularpitted limestone, it covers the marble bottom with a chrys-talitic sheen. ii8

Here windbreaks of oleanders make admirable pictures,while a stiff papaw column with its pouch-shaped fruit belowits crown, a palmetto, a cocoanut palm and the luxuriantbanana plantations furnish a retinue of quickly succeedingimpressions that the camera-artist in dismay struggles toretain on his vanishing films. It is impossible in Bermuda towithhold admiration of the illimitable detail in its roads, shoresand fields—a detail always delicate and alluring At an angle of Harrington Sound, a stone wall, pale andmossy, overhangs the water just above a button bush thathas grown stout or deformed and hangs its lower bower ofleaves above the nacreous nipple. Perhaps by no art canthe photographer quite catch these subtle effects, and yet I 119 would not call them subtle either—there can be no mysteriesin such revealing sunlight—it is their briliant surface that hemisses.
