h to do a great deal, it willbe well to keep down the cost of his outfit, so shall makesuggestions on that basis. Brushes should be of the kind mounted in tin. Get follow-ing sable brushes: No. i. No 2, No. 5, No. 7, No. 9; flatcamels hair brushes, No. 3 and No. 5. Paints had better be purchased in half pans, as the tubesare apt to dry up if kept too long after opening. Thosemade by Winsor & Newton are very satisfactory. I have alsoused with good results the German colors prepared by H.Schimcke & Co., of Dusseldorf, which cost only about halfas much as the first named. The trouble in using paints by different makers is thatwhile under the same names, they may be of different shades. It is not necessary to have a lot of colors on the start, asmore can be added if needed. If you want to color portraits,would recommend your reading No. 44, Vol. 4 of the Photo-Miniature; but if your work is to be on landscapes, you willneed the following: Orange; pink madder; permanent violet; ISO

[edit]
This image was taken from Flickr's The Commons. The uploading organization may have various reasons for determining that no known copyright restrictions exist, such as:
  1. The copyright is in the public domain because it has expired;
  2. The copyright was injected into the public domain for other reasons, such as failure to adhere to required formalities or conditions;
  3. The institution owns the copyright but is not interested in exercising control; or
  4. The institution has legal rights sufficient to authorize others to use the work without restrictions.

Public domain
Public domain
This media file is in the public domain in the United States. This applies to U.S. works where the copyright has expired, often because its first publication occurred prior to January 1, 1929, and if not then due to lack of notice or renewal. See this page for further explanation.

United States
United States
This image might not be in the public domain outside of the United States; this especially applies in the countries and areas that do not apply the rule of the shorter term for US works, such as Canada, Mainland China (not Hong Kong or Macao), Germany, Mexico, and Switzerland. The creator and year of publication are essential information and must be provided. See Wikipedia:Public domain and Wikipedia:Copyrights for more details.
Public domain

The author died in 1939, so this work is in the public domain in its country of origin and other countries and areas where the copyright term is the author's life plus 80 years or fewer.

You must also include a United States public domain tag to indicate why this work is in the public domain in the United States. Note that a few countries have copyright terms longer than 80 years: Mexico has 100 years and Jamaica has 95 years. This image may not be in the public domain in these countries, which moreover do not implement the rule of the shorter term.
