le the horizontal portion connecting with theholder shows against the background as a thin, dark line, which may easily be penciled out in the negative. The back-ground is best supported on an individual stand, so that it maybe manipulated independently of the flower support. I em-ploy rather a large stand on castors. It is what in a portraitstudio would be called a cloud effect background, and I amable by pushing the background to and fro to pick out someportion of the background that will be an effective contrast tothe plant before it. One great advantage to be gained byphotographing plants at home is the possibility of arrangingthem so that the principal parts come in the same plane; thispermits of a larger stop being used, and less risk of movement. For detailed work of parts of plants, such as seed vessels, single flowers and similar things that cannot be regarded asphoto-micrography, I use a camera and baseboard similarto those used in photo-micrography. The object carrier isusually a test-tube holder, but may be any temporary contriv-ance that happens to hold it best. Using a short-focus anas-tigmat lens, magnifications of three diameters can be readilygot with moderate bellows extension. It should be borne inmind, however, that the detail-giving power of a lens is pro-portional to its numerical aperture and that the N.A. of aphotographic lens is very small, hence it is always necessaryto employ lenses other than purely photographic when muchenlargement of parts is needed. If work among such plants as the gramineae is contemplated,it may be better accomplished by employing the camera ver-tically and arranging the plant on a sheet of glass, belowwhich, at some distance, is the background. This methodnecessitates a stand made for the purpose, but it may be quitea s
