color. Some stains of generaluse giving very satisfactory results are Mayers Carmine, Bis-marckbraun. Kernschwarz (made especially for this pur-pose), and Haidenhains Iron-alum Haematoxylin. In general, stains which give the colors which are photo-graphically dark are the easiest to use, and those in blue andpurple the hardest to use. In case the slides are alreadymounted much help can be secured by the judicious use ofscreens in various shades of yellow, orange and green. Thesemay be prepared by an undeveloped plate until all the silverhas been dissolved out, washing thoroughly, then immersing ina solution of picric acid for yellow, methyl orange for orange,Bismarckbraun for a darker shade of orange, and methylgreen for green. The screen thus prepared can be placed upon the stage ofthe microscope under the slide. In this work, as in everything else photographic, successdepends upon experience, adaptability, and patience; but, witha fair supply of these, results will be sure to come.
