nd colors, that can be only suggested by thebest productions of lens or brush. At first glance, photographing against the light might appearto be easy. One might think so on account of the intensityof the light and the general simplicity of forms. There are,however, to offset these advantages, a thousand and onedifficulties not encountered in other classes of photographythat have to be contended with. It would be impossible to write an article or a completebook that would fulfill all the needs of the person startingout to do this class of work. Every scene and every exposurehas its own peculiar pitfalls and stumbling blocks, no twoare exactly alike. The following few observations will, how-ever, be useful and may help to avoid some of the mostpommon of them. It is best never to go on a trip, or for pleasure, without thecamera if circumstances will permit it to be taken, (Theauthor missed getting the grandest sunset on the ocean hehas ever seen on account of so doing.) Without amoments notice the sun will break through heavy clouds,sometimes for only a minute, transforming the lifeless sceneinto a wonderland of beauty. One should be in readiness to make an exposure on shortnotice, and, needless to say, spend all spare time studyingthe forms of passing objects, and composing pictures in mind.There is always a few critical moments when everything isat its best, and a person does not want to be hunting a prettyscene or some object of interest for the foreground whenthat time comes. It is usually best to make the exposure when the sun isglinting through the lower edge of a cloud. This allows thefull light to fall on the water if there be any, making a wakeand at the same time keeps the strong rays from strikingthe lens.
