If our American pictorialistswould give to the American Salon but a portion of the zeal andenthusiasm shown by the Englishman for his London Salon,and which Salon gets out of London only as fragments; ifthey were alive to the importance of the Salon in our nationalartistic life, how it is pioneering the way for greater thingsartistic and educational, with its influence extending far beyondthe pale of mere photography, then they surely would holdup the hands of the management, would contribute the best oftheir work and cause others to do likewise. They would sus-tain the Salon in such a way that the mere announcementwould be sufficient to have the work pour in from everyonewho has work to offer. Several museums of art, art societies, as wellas educational organizations, have sprung into existence, orare in a fair way to exist, through the known influence of theAmerican Salon. In several places the public schools have been influenced todecorate their walls with pictorial photography. Publiclibraries in several small towns are forming art societies, withthe children of the public schools saving their pennies to pur-chase works of art. By close observation, it seems that to theaverage layman a photograph will awaken more than merewonder and admiration. That it is a scene taken by thecamera, he can grasp. That he can do the same, he can hope,and that it is within reach of his intelligence, he believes.But a great painting? It inspires awe, and he can only holdup his hands in admiration and he never gets any farther.
